Steve Venegas - Top 5 Records of 08

Posted: 17 Dec 2008 11:36 AM CST

Everything about the album feels organic, warm, somewhat mysterious. The double-step drum pacing evokes steam-engines dashing across the plains, the choral vocals stir up shadows of chivalry and mossy grey fortresses, with an end result feeling like something that straddles difference between larping and a spaghetti western

Nine Inch Nails Music Used To Tortue At Gitmo

Posted: 17 Dec 2008 11:35 AM CST

The tactic has been common in the U.S. war on terror, with forces systematically using loud music on hundreds of detainees in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay. Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, then the U.S. military commander in Iraq, authorized it on Sept. 14, 2003, "to create fear, disorient ... and prolong capture shock."

Music Review of This Is Not The World by The Futureheads

This Is Not The World by The Futureheads launched its opening with the groovy and anthemic "The Beginning of The Twist". Barry goes, "It's time to wake up, it's time to change, let's get it started… I can feel it, i conceal it, i can feel it coming, the beginning of the twist…"

Taking on a largely indie pop feel Modern Guilt is as interesting an effort as the year has had to offer. And at just over a half hour long Modern Guilt may be a short record, but in that time Beck manages to produce an album that is enthralling for every moment.

Music and songs over Christmas

Music to sing, play and listen to over the festive period. Everything we do needs some kind of atmosphere, something to set the scene, and in my mind, little can do that better than music.

Nathan Atnikov - Top 5 Records of 08

In a year when a lot of critical darlings released disappointing albums (The Hold Steady, Kings of Leon, Bloc Party, etc), it was a virtual unknown who stole the show. Bon Iver self-released For Emma, Forever Ago last year, to see it receive a proper release in 2008 and an amazingly positive reception

Connor Turner - Top 5 Records of 08

It took a little over five years for the once condemned music genre of mash-ups to transition from kitschy fad to critical sensation. And we have Girl Talk's Feed The Animals to thank for this. Fusing (what could possibly be) every single popular track to be released in the past fifteen years into one seamless record is an impressive feat.
